Mobile Baykeeper: Fighting to protect our waterways!

Highway 98 Construction
Runoff from stormwater is widely regarded as one of the top threats to water quality throughout the country. Stormwater runoff is rain water that flows over the ground, sometimes with extreme force, picking up sediment and pollution and enters our waterways. Some of the major projects Mobile Baykeeper is currently working on involve stormwater runoff, including the
construction of Highway 98 and the Publix construction in Fairhope affecting Fly Creek.

In the course of construction of U.S. Highway 98, ALDOT has caused huge amounts of contamination to infiltrate the tributaries, streams, and wetlands which feed Big Creek Lake polluting the exclusive source of drinking water for 250,000 people in Mobile and parts of Baldwin County. Mobile Baykeeper filed a suit against ALDOT in 2005 because we believed a full Environmental Impact Statement was needed on this project. We settled in 2006 because we were assured that the waterway would be protected. ALDOT broke this promise and the negative impacts visited on our drinking water supply and the once pristine Escatawpa River prompted Mobile Baykeeper to join with MAWSS to protect the Big Creek Lake watershed.

Mobile Baykeeper has been accused of putting the safety of our natural resources above our personal safety. The reality is that this stretch of highway does not solve concerns over personal safety as it does not connect to anything. Because the “Gap” project won’t be completed for about five years, we have time to more carefully and thoughtfully address the concerns associated with this construction. Our drinking water supply is too important to allow political pressure to force us to settle before protective measures are in place.
