Criteria for next ADEM director
 
 
Leadership
 
ü A candidate who understands ADEM’s responsibility and objective as a regulatory agency is to protect the environment and public health, while economic sustainability should be a positive consequence, not an objective, of the state’s environmental regulatory authority.
ü A candidate who possesses strong communication skills and proven ability to utilize those skills in working cooperatively with the public, the media, elected officials, an oversight board, and staff.
ü A candidate who possesses proven experience in managing personnel in a democratic style that provides an atmosphere in which staff and management can thrive and work together to achieve agency goals.
ü A candidate who possesses an understanding of the political challenges of a state regulatory agency yet the skills and ethics to rise above politics and do the job that is required of them.
ü A candidate who has strong administrative skills and extensive experience as an administrator with a private corporation, non-profit organization, or governmental agency.
ü A candidate who possesses the knowledge of and commitment to Environmental Justice.
ü A candidate who possesses the knowledge of the linkages between environmental degradation and public health.
ü A candidate that is willing to a proactive stance on pursuing legislation and regulations to address Alabama’s particular environmental needs.
 
Enforcement
 
ü A candidate who possesses a working knowledge of federal and state delegated environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
ü A candidate who has the interest to make stronger enforcement of environmental regulations a high priority at the agency.
ü A candidate who has the interest in working with other state and federal agencies to protect and restore biodiversity.
 
Resources
 
ü A candidate who has experience in acquiring innovative funding sources for state environmental protection and a commitment to increasing partnerships with federal, state, and other local agencies to increase funds available.
ü A candidate that recognizes the value of certified citizen data and is willing to utilize this resource to further the mission of the agency.
 
 
Public Participation
 
ü A candidate who has a proven commitment to open door policy with regards to public involvement and encouraging broad public participation in organizational decisions, protocol, and policies.
ü A candidate who has the proven ability to bring diverse interests together to cooperate in resolving conflicts and developing solutions.
ü A candidate who has working knowledge of state and federal open records laws and is committed to making public records available to the public in a timely, efficient manner.
ü A candidate who has knowledge and experience in the field of community planning and who has the willingness to work with local leaders and citizens to connect federal and state regulations and decisions to local and county regulations and decisions.
