7 Must-Do Events Before the End of Summer

Summer may be coming to a close soon, but it’s not quite over yet. Before the kids head back to school, try these seven must-do events before the season officially ends. From participating in the world’s largest fishing tournament and sampling local food truck fare to enjoying the arts and spending time on the water, the next few weeks offer plenty of ways for you to get involved, give back, and have fun as you enjoy the last few weeks of summer.

1. 85th Annual Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo

WHEN: Friday, July 20, 2018 9:30 AM - Sunday, July 22, 2018 5:30 PM

WHERE: Dauphin Island, Alabama

Did you know the World’s LARGEST Fishing Tournament takes place right here in our own backyard? Over 3,000 anglers and 75,000 spectators gather on Dauphin Island to take part in this iconic three-day event featuring 30 different categories. Mobile Baykeeper will again be sponsoring the Lionfish category. There will also be delicious food, drinks, beer, and some of the best live music our area has to offer. Stop by the Mobile Baykeeper tent to learn about membership opportunities, buy Baykeeper merchandise, and enter our giveaway to win a brand new Kysek cooler (a $249 value, donated by Keith Air Conditioning)! 2. Flora Bama Gulf Coast Paddle Championship


WHEN: Saturday July 21, 2018 7:00 AM-12:00 PM

 WHERE: Flora-Bama Lounge, Perdido Key, FL

Ever wanted to put your paddle boarding skills to the test? Well look no further! Join us for the 4th Annual Flora-Bama Gulf Coast Paddle Championship. This event offers something for every type of paddler including a 9-mile Elite race, 4-mile Open race, 1-mile race, and Kids race. Baykeeper staff members will be participating as volunteers and a portion of proceeds will benefit our efforts for clean water, clean air, and healthy communities. 3. Bay Bites Food Truck Festival

WHEN: Wednesday, July 25, 2018 / 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM

WHERE: Cooper Riverside Park, Mobile, AL

Hosted by Mobile Baykeeper's Young Advisory Council, Bay Bites is an annual food truck festival featuring a variety of different cuisine from local food trucks, craft beer from SweetWater Brewing and wine from BeatBox Beverages, live music by Roadside Glorious, lawn games, and kids entertainment, on the riverfront of Downtown Mobile at Cooper Riverside Park. This is a great way to support our work for clean water and our growing local food truck movement.

Tickets: $20 in advance and $25 day of the event (online and at the gate). One ticket includes three drink tokens (beer or coke products) and access to the best food trucks in the area. 4. Barefoot Wine Beach Cleanup


WHEN: Saturday, August 4, 2018 / 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

 WHERE: The Hangout, Gulf Shores, AL

We’re excited to partner with Barefoot Wine and clean up a section of  our treasured Alabama beaches at The Hangout in Gulf Shores. After the cleanup, there will also be a special after party sponsored by Barefoot! 5. 6th Annual Pelican Paddle at Weeks Bay

WHEN: August 4, 2018, beginning at 7:30 AM

WHERE: Weeks Bay Foundation, Fairhope, AL

Join our good friends and partners from the Weeks Bay Foundation for this family friendly paddle board and kayak extravaganza on Fish River.There will be something offered for everyone -  from the competitive paddler to those who just want to take a scenic cruise of Weeks Bay. Don’t have your own boat or lifejacket? Canoes, kayaks, and life jackets will be available to use on a first come, first serve basis. 6. Frank Ledbetter Art Auction benefiting Mobile Baykeeper

    WHERE: Dority’s Bar and Grill, Dauphin Island, AL

Take a trip back down to Dauphin Island two weekends after the fishing rodeo  to see the unique, Gulf Coast-inspired metal artwork of local artist Frank Ledbetter. Frank is an artist with a moving story, and is known for his smaller works and his public pieces featured in places like Kenner, LA. For this auction, Frank has crafted a Red Snapper -- a favorite of anglers and foodies alike -- the first in a series of pieces of which the proceeds will benefit Mobile Baykeeper. We invite you to spend an afternoon  with us over drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and live music highlighting the beauty of Mobile Bay and supporting our work for clean water, clean air, and healthy communities. 7. The Big Float


WHEN: Saturday, August 18, 2018 / Paddle from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. After party from 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM.

WHERE: Fairhope Marina & Boatyard (After party at Sunset Pointe)

Paddles up for clean water! Join us for a kayak trip on Fly Creek followed by an after party at Sunset Pointe. Guests who have their own canoes or kayaks are encouraged to bring them but rentals will also be available.Stay tuned for more details about this event.
