Have yourself a Litter-Free Mardi Gras

It’s that time of year again… Carnival season and king cakes! Which means Mobile Baykeeper is launching into our second year of the Litter-Free Mardi Gras campaign and we invite YOU to join us!

A little backstory: we received a $56,000 grant from the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) in August 2017 to remove legacy litter from One Mile Creek, restore its beauty, and help Mobile move toward a litter-free Mardi Gras ensuring the health of the creek for years to come. To accomplish this, we are implementing a multi-phase approach --  phase one: Restoring One Mile Creek through community litter cleanups; phase two: partnering with the City of Mobile to install Storm Drain Litter Barriers along the parade route; last but not least, phase three: prevent litter from entering the storm drains by creating community awareness of Litter-Free Mardi Gras!

Don't get us wrong, we love Mardi Gras just as much as the next Mobilian. It’s a great way to celebrate the history of our wonderful city! It is also our responsibility as a community to celebrate without impacting our creeks, rivers, and bays. So this Mardi Gras we encourage you to party on, and pick it up!

How to have a Litter-Free Mardi Gras:

  • Earn those throws.

    • Catch throws, place them in a reusable bag to take home with you or give them to a nearby child to make their night even more magical.

  • Pickup what is left behind.

    • Throw it in a nearby trash can and recycle when possible; encourage your friends to do the same.

  • Place a trash can outside your business or residence if you are along the parade route to make it even easier for people to properly dispose of items.

  • Share your Mardi Gras pictures on social media using #LitterFreeMG or #PartyOnJustPickItUp to help us spread the message.

  • Participate in the Post-Mardi Gras Cleanup on One Mile Creek - March 9th - to help us remove any litter that made it to the creek before it ends up in Mobile Bay.

If we all do our part this Carnival season we can help move Mobile (the birthplace of Mardi Gras) towards a Litter-Free Mardi Gras!

Thank You to our #LitterFreeMG Partners
